One of our areas of expertise is Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) Analysis, Design and Implementation. ETL, in large, is a domain of back end, high volume processes and batch systems. It is a process (dozens or hundreds of process in large enterprises), which integrates one data domain into another data domain (think of front office operational data marts and back end Enterprise Data Warehouse). ETL has been born as a real sub area of IT during explosion of corporate mergers, restructuring and hostile takeovers in the late 90ies of the last century.
Last week we have been challenged of a last minute requirement. Requirement which has been deemed mission critical and the key factor in securing project funding. As we call it - Do or Die change. We had three days to execute System Analysis and engage all participating vendors in effort estimation and budgeting. A task which could be deemed impossible if one considers distributed nature of existing process, multi-vendor, multi-network and multi domain environments and unavailability of key SMEs. How did we do it? The power of a diagram!
